The training:

Mindfulness training is an intervention based on eastern attention/meditation techniques, which helps developing a wide, open awareness as well as focused attention, and reducing automatic responding. Mindful Parenting is a specific application of mindfulness, for parents who have (had) mental health problems that interfere with parenting, or whose child or children have mental health problems. Mindful Parenting can also be delivered to parents who experience parenting stress.

Mindful Parenting is a programme of 9 sessions, delivered to groups of 10-15 parents. There is a clinical programme of 3-hours sessions, and a preventative programme of 2-hours sessions. Research has confirmed that Mindful Parenting has profound and long-lasting effects on parental and child psychopathology, parenting stress, and (co)parenting.

Target Audience:

This 5-day advanced teacher training is meant for mental health professionals with a background in mindfulness training and meditation, who want to use Mindful Parenting with their clients.

Participation requirements:

• education and experience as a mindfulness teacher

Minimum requirement:
• having followed an MBSR/MBCT training for yourself (8 weeks groupproces)
• having a regular meditation process
• having followed at least a 4-days retreat

The training will be given in English with German translation.

Participants will receive training in both the clinical and preventive program. By means of meditation practices, in which participants place themselves in the role of parents, the typical Mindful Parenting exercises are experienced, and subsequently practiced in the role of the instructor. Video-examples will be shown.

The trainer:

Susan Bögels is a professor in Developmental Psychopathology at the University of Amsterdam, as well as a licensed clinical psychologist and cognitive behaviour and child and family therapist. Susan is also the director of the academic center for the treatment of parents and children, (UvA minds), in which evidence-based cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness interventions are offered to families. Susan is a practicing mindfulness trainer, specialized in mindfulness for children and their parents in a mental health context.
